DELTA DE TIGRE

Location: Just 20 km. north from Buenos Aires. You can take a public train in down town (Retiro) and be in 50 min. into the Delta, Tigre city station.

Weather: Humid and middle temperature. Rainy on winter (June to August) and dryer on spring. Very hot on summer (December to March). Middle temperature during summer: 28º. Middle temperature during winter: 16º
Activities: Water sports (water ski, wakeboarding, rowing, kayaking, sailing, and boating). Bird watching, trekking, fishing on board and wonderful for photo safaris.

Accommodation: You get plenty options from U$S 20 to U$S 100 daily per double bedrooms. You may choose to be hosted in the continent or in some of the hundreds islands spread into the Delta of the Parana River. There is all normal hotel services, including breakfast and or kitchens for own cooking.

Phone: phone is everywhere but Internet service in the islands is still not available, but you can go downtown any time by public boats. Dialing to Tigre City is same as Buenos Aires. Nationally is: 011 + phone, and internationally: 5411 + phone

Welcome to Buenos Aires Delta in Tigre city. It is called the Venice of the Americas because here there are no roads, just rivers flowing everywhere with hotels, resto - bars, schools, resident and non resident houses, everything spread all over. The Delta is quite huge; it contains more than a thousand islands and covers more than 200 km square.
The way to visit here is by boat. At the public boat station, you may get from big and huge Boat Motor Cats to individual motor boats or even rowing boats. Public fees go from U$S 2 for a ride of 4 Hs. or U$S 10 to private ones.
As you can see on the picture on the right, many locals living in the Delta have their own boat which can be a sailing boat or a motor one that can also be rented for traveling around. There are some companies which provide you private navigation boats with special topics, photo safaris, kayaking into wild areas, rowing, fishing, etc. The river determinates the way of living and everybody enjoys water sports. You can find all water sports practiced here, from sailing, windsurfing to water ski, wakeboarding, and the most popular of all sports, rowing.
Public transport is quite good, not best but it’s been working from the late 50´s, with handmade wooden ships very well maintained. Even though it is a bit noisy, it goes to every island in the Delta because most locals use it as the only way of transportation. Fees are very cheap, for U$S 2 to U$S 4 you can have a round trip for almost every place...
Many locals also have their own rowing boat or, if you live in Buenos Aires, there are many rowing clubs which provide boats for rent. These clubs are also the seeding places for the Argentinean Professional Rowing Team, which is very well ranked internationally
Once you are inside the Delta, you will discover a very peaceful area with quiet streams, deep subtropical forest, hundreds of birds, and plenty silence. One of the best way to merge yourself into it is to hire the service of a local guide and go kayaking or rowing into wild areas.
I had hired one of the best local guides of the area, Rosana from Bonanza. She lives in the island with her husband and father and owns a private place for adventure tours working as a travel guide for individual or groups. Her tour includes bird watching, kayaking, wet trekking (as seen on the picture), forest trekking and more.
Rosana guides Eugenia trough a track inside the island surrounded by subtropical forest. The track took us an hour and a half, discovering wonderful plants and birds of the Delta.
Living in the Delta is just like living in any other place. People work, people study, and kids go to school. As you can see here, a public school boat is waiting small kids (from 3 to 11 years old) to carry them home after school hours.
Here you can see a typical "chata" - special boat for wood transportation - navigating almost under water, but is the way they go. These are very commonly seen on the most important rivers like here on the "Sarmiento River".
And as tourism enterprises keep on growing, also the service for tourists becomes much popular. Some people take a ride on a motor cat and others take a stop at the restaurant beside the river.
If you are in the wild areas, you can also stop at almost any place and take a tea, coffee or lunch (cabins, hotels, and resto). Everything is prepared for you to have a pleasant moment.
